This Memorial Day, it’s important that we focus on more than the three-day weekend. It’s a day to honor those who have lost their lives while in the US Armed Forces. Many young kids may not be able to grasp the depth of this national holiday, but it’s never too early to teach them respect for our military heroes. Here are some kid-friendly activities to celebrate Memorial Day that also teach the importance of the day.

SHOW YOUR COLORS

Whether you fly the American flag or wear red, white, and blue clothes, show them off! If you don’t have a flag, help your kids make their own from construction paper. You can make an actual flag, gluing stars and stripes to a large, white poster board, or make red, white, and blue streamers. Have older kids? Teach them how to fold a flag and fly it properly. Just keep in mind to fly your flags at half-mast.

CREATE A CARE PACKAGE

Build a connection with your children and create a special care package to send oversees to those currently fighting for our country’s freedom. Our soldiers appreciate everything, even a card. AnySoldier.com helps to connect citizens with current active military, making it that much easier to show your support and get your kids involved. Let their creativity flow and let them take charge of the care package!

AMERICA THE DELICIOUS

American-themed desserts will be everywhere this Memorial Day, from backyard parties to town fairs. Many desserts will feature red, white, and blue fruits and frostings, like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and more. You can decorate a cake like a flag, make a yogurt parfait, or create your own flavors for a truly unique dessert. Invite a veteran over to make the day that much more meaningful!
