While the beginning of school is a highly-anticipated breath of fresh air for parents, the special occasion requires quite a bit of preparation. Along with planning carpools, playdates, and extracurricular activities, there’s the daunting task of back-to-school shopping.
To help minimize your back-to-school shopping tasks, here are some tips to make sure you’re prepared with the items your kids actually need for this school year.
Make a List and Check it Twice
For starters, get your hands on the teacher’s list. Cross off what you already have in the house. There’s always more than you think sitting on shelves and in closets. A mini stapler? Watercolor paint pallet? White-out…? Those are items that probably didn’t get used too many times last year (if at all). And if you’re not sure if an item is a suggestion or necessity, definitely reach out to your child’s teacher for clarification.
Gear Up the Basics
Pencils, pens, highlighters, and three-ringed notebooks are among the most important supplies to send on that first day. And, to prevent more work for you, make sure the kids have binders and folders. The more they organize at school, the less you have to re-organize at home! If you didn’t get a new lunchbox or backpack last year, keep in mind that your child may need a new one this year, as well.
First Day Outfit
Before you check out, don’t forget the second half of school shopping-clothes and shoes. With kids constantly growing, go through their closets and see what wiggle room (if any) is available.
Then: shop the essentials. Soft cotton tees (plenty of them!), leggings, jeans, undies (of course!), and socks. Also, keep a couple of hoodies around for chillier days. Depending on where you live, it could also be necessary to get a waterproof layer or heavier jacket for winter months. Lastly, be sure to have a good pair of sneakers ready to go!
With all the essentials on your shopping list, keep an eye out for major savings with back-to-school sales and coupons to maximize this year’s shopping trip. Now, have fun and let the countdown until school continue!
