Let’s face, it sometimes your next brushing is long after your last meal.

And when this is the case, our breath can be a problem. If you’re like me, you usually reach for a stick of gum to help take the edge off. This is actually a great option if you can’t brush, as gum helps to break food particles loose and stimulates saliva to wash away sugars and bacteria from your teeth.

But if it’s fresh breath you’re really after, keep in mind that not all gums are created equally. Some varieties of gums actually contain natural oils that fight odor-causing germs. Here’s a short list to help you choose the best gum for your purse, backpack or briefcase.

Cinnamon: This might be one of the best, as the oils found in cinnamon kill germs, and have a naturally fresh smell.

Mint: Pick a mint, any mint. Peppermint, spearmint, winter mint all of these are great at stimulating saliva production to kill germs, and gives you a great shot of freshness.

Citrus: These don’t have a very lasting fresh smell, but they do stimulating saliva production even better than mint gums, and the oils in citrus kill bacteria.

Whether you choose uber-mint of cinnamon-shocker, the important thing is that chewing gum helps more than just your breath. Not only does it have the benefits listed above, it also helps reduce snacking, strengthens your jaw and even aids in digestion. As an added bonus, if you choose a gum with xylitol as the active ingredient not only are you freshening your breathe but actual killing the bacterial that causes tooth decay!
