Easy Home Remedies For Your Mouth

While we always advise visiting your dentist for any dental pain, sometimes you may need a home remedy in the meantime. From a chipped tooth to a cavity, here are some easy ways to temporarily tide yourself over until you can visit your dentist.

Swish: These ingredients found in your home can be swished in your mouth for temporary relief:

Mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and swish around your mouth for about 30 seconds. Spit out and repeat as necessary. Salt may draw out bacteria causing inflammation. Be sure to check with your physician before swishing with this solution if you have any heart condition, including high blood pressure.

Swish a mouthful of 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 30 seconds. Then spit it out, rinse several times, and repeat as necessary. Hydrogen peroxide can help kill infection-causing bacteria in your mouth.

Swallow: Some over-the-counter pain relief can be effective for temporarily managing dental pain. Never exceed the recommended dosage, and consult your doctor if you have any health concerns.

Ibuprofen can be temporarily effective for a toothache pain because it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Dental pain often comes from inflammation, so this pain reliever can target the right place.

Acetaminophen does not reduce inflammation, but can still be an effective way to temporarily relieve dental pain and fevers.

Brew: Make yourself a nice, hot cup of peppermint tea! Peppermint tea has a numbing and soothing effect, which your aching tooth will be thankful for. Let your tea cool, then swish it around your mouth. Feel free to swallow or spit it out.
