While in school, your children will have to take many tests that you won’t be able to help with (if y = 3, x = ? Anyone?), but there is one exam that you can help them pass with flying colors. The school oral health exams! These are new to many schools in the country, but are a preventative measure to keep your child’s teeth healthy from a young age. We have all the information you need to help them prepare.

The first step is brushing their teeth, of course. This should be done at least two times a day (bonus points if they are brushing after lunch), once in the morning and once in the evening. This will keep plaque from building up on their teeth.

Second, make sure they are flossing! Flossing is just as important as brushing, as it prevents plaque build up between the teeth, removes pieces of food that the toothbrush can’t reach and keeps their gums healthy.

Finally, be sure they are seeing a dentist two times a year for check-ups. At these appointments they will get x-rays, cleanings and fluoride treatments. This is another preventative measure that helps them maintain healthy habits and keep their teeth clean.

It really can be that simple! If you still have questions regarding the school oral health exams, reach out to your child’s school or dentist to schedule an appointment.

Good luck on the first exam of the year, kiddos – we know you’ll ace it!
