We don’t tend to give our teeth much thought as we chomp through the day, that is, unless something is wrong. Sugars, acids, extreme temperatures, as well as the daily onslaught of chewing and biting can really do a number on our teeth. For those who have suffered from tooth pain due to damage, you know prevention is a much better alternative to treatment.

Brushing and flossing are great ways to keep your teeth healthy, but did you know diet can also affect your smile? Here is some food for thought about well food.

Avoid sticky foods like taffy that can get wedged in your teeth, loosen fillings and even yank out crowns. Some great alternatives that can actually help strengthen your teeth include nuts, cheeses, meats, and milk. The high calcium and phosphorus levels in these foods can actually help protect and strengthen your tooth enamel.

Foods with high water content are some of the best for your teeth. Look for crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples, pears and celery. The water in these foods helps to dilute the effects of the sugars they contain and wash away bacteria. If you have acidic foods like tomatoes or lemons, eat them as part of a larger meal to help dilute the effects of the acids.

Every mouth is unique, and some foods are better depending on your particular needs. Not sure what those needs are? Stop in and see us at Monarch Dental and we’ll help you get on the right track with your diet.
