Back to School Checklist: A Healthy Smile

Monday - July 31st, 2017

When it’s time for your kids to go back to school, the last thing you want to deal with is cavities right at the beginning of the year. While the new school year may be right around the corner, it’s important to start being proactive with your kid’s overall oral health. Try getting into a good routine for brushing and flossing, eating the right foods, and getting a cleaning and exam.

Regular Brushing and Flossing

Preventing cavities starts at home. With good oral hygiene, it’s much easier to keep cavities and other oral health issues in check, especially with the occasional sugary indulgence. It’s important for them to brush with fluoride toothpaste and to change brushes every three months or after an illness. Always ask your dentist for their recommendations on the best brushing and flossing habits.

Get an Exam

It’s so important to not forget to get an exam and cleaning before the start of the school year. You’ll want to know if your child has good oral health and to make sure they maintain it through the start of school. If their teeth could be better, it’s easier to implement a food change or more regular brushing to jumpstart an oral health makeover. Nobody wants to miss school for frequent visits to the dentist that could have been prevented with better oral hygiene and food choices.

Eating Healthy Food

Once you have the exam out of the way and are on track with brushing and flossing, it comes down to what your kids are eating to keep their oral health in top shape. It’s important to include healthy lunch items like milk, cheese, veggies, yogurt, and fruit. If they don’t take a packed lunch and eat from the cafeteria, make sure to review the healthy food options with them so they know what foods to eat and what foods to avoid.
