What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges fill in the gaps caused by one or two missing teeth. Either end is suspended by a healthy tooth or dental implant, depending on how many teeth are missing. The dental bridge procedure serves multiple purposes, including maintaining natural tooth spacing, restoring oral function, and enhancing your smile’s aesthetics. Unlike removable appliances, the benefits of natural bridges offer an affordable tooth replacement that’s permanently fixed in place. Because they are suspended over the open space in your smile, these restorations essentially “bridge the gap” in your bite, hence why they are referred to as “bridges.”

Types of Dental Bridges

Most dental bridges are traditional, tooth-supported restorations suspended by a pair of healthy teeth. Depending on your personal preferences and where the missing teeth are located in your mouth, typical designs include:

Porcelain

Full porcelain bridges are made from solid tooth-colored materials, matched by our dentists to blend in with your adjacent teeth. Once installed, your porcelain bridge looks like a natural part of your smile.

Porcelain and Metal

Porcelain fused to metal bridges are crafted from two layers: a metal base covered by tooth-colored porcelain. This design provides added strength without compromising aesthetics.

All-Metal

A metal alloy, such as gold, may be used in tooth restoration because of its high durability against biting and chewing pressures. Metal bridges are typically reserved for posterior (back) teeth, which are not as visible when you smile.

Implant Supported Dental Bridges

If you do not have structurally sound teeth capable of supporting a bridge, our experienced dentists may recommend an implant-supported alternative. Implant bridges are suspended by one implant on either end of the bridge, allowing for the option of replacing up to 3-4 teeth at a time.

What is it like to Get a Dental Bridge at Monarch Dental?

Bridges are a durable solution to replace missing teeth, ensuring a treatment experience that will leave you smiling. Before choosing to get a dental bridge, we will need to perform a thorough examination of your mouth and take a set of x-rays to evaluate the available supporting structures. Depending on your circumstances, we will review your options and recommend which one is best. The dental bridge process itself is typically completed in two stages:

Tooth Preparation and Impressions

Since each end of the bridge is supported by a natural abutment tooth, those teeth will be prepared similarly to when you receive a dental crown. First, we anesthetize the teeth to ensure your comfort, and then we reduce the width of the enamel and take a set of impressions for our lab. A temporary restoration is placed over your abutment teeth by our experienced dentists to prevent any sensitivity. We also work with you to make sure the bridge is a shade that matches your teeth to ensure a natural-looking smile.

Final Bridge Placement

Approximately two weeks later, you will return to Monarch Dental to have the temporary restorations removed and your final, permanent dental bridge bonded into place. During this appointment, we will check the occlusion (biting relationship) of your bridge and review oral health maintenance tips, such as how to clean your new prosthesis. While the bridge itself is resistant to bacteria, it is vital to thoroughly clean the teeth or implants used to support it.

What is the Recovery and Aftercare Like for a Dental Bridge?

A typical dental bridge can last 15 years or more with good oral hygiene and regular checkups. Your dental bridge maintenance routine should include daily flossing around and under the bridge, brushing as normal, and scheduling a professional dental cleaning at least once every six months. To clean under your bridge, we typically recommend using floss threaders, a water flosser, or a tufted interproximal brush. We will discuss follow-up care tips so that you can find the best cleaning habits for your situation.

If you tend to clench or grind your teeth (a condition known as bruxism), we also recommend wearing a night guard when you sleep. This protective splint limits the risk of wear or chipping on your bridge as well as the opposing teeth.

How Much Does a Dental Bridge Cost?

Compared to other types of tooth replacement treatments, dental bridges offer long-lasting results at an economical price point. Since most insurance plans cover bridge treatment, your cost is as minimal as possible. The total price for a bridge treatment is also affected by the type of materials chosen and how many teeth are being replaced, in addition to alternative designs such as implant-supported bridges.

At Monarch Dental, we will provide you with a detailed treatment plan outlining the steps of your restorative dentistry needs and applicable fees. This plan will also include estimated insurance coverage and optional financing options so that you know what to expect. Other costs to consider may include adjunctive services, such as sedation dentistry or dental implants, for implant-supported bridge designs.
