What Are the Pros and Cons of Dairy?

With so many people eliminating diary from their diets these days, it’s hard not to wonder whether dairy products are in fact good or bad for you.

Here are both sides of the story to help you make a decision.

Pros of dairy: Dairy products are a top food source for vitamin D and calcium, which are essential nutrients for healthy bones and teeth. There are other food sources for calcium (like leafy greens and processed foods fortified with it), but you need to be diligent about getting enough. Dairy is also a good source of protein, plus it contains amino acids that support healthy muscles and digestion. If you’re considering going dairy-free, you may want to consider taking a multi-vitamin or supplements to ensure you’re getting all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Cons of dairy: Lactose intolerance and milk allergies are the top reasons people stop eating dairy. Approximately 12% of the US population is lactose intolerant, meaning they do not have the enzyme necessary to break down lactose. Without it, consuming dairy can result in gastrointestinal problems, such as bloating and gas.

Before making any changes to your diet, talk to your doctor or a certified nutritionist. They can help you make the best choices and ensure you’re taking the right steps to be healthy.
