3 Red Cross Activities for Red Cross Month

Designated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943, each March is Red Cross Month to celebrate and raise awareness for the far-reaching contributions made by the American Red Cross. This organization has been providing aid for over 130 years in the form of food, shelter, emotional support and first-aid.

As stated by the Red Cross, their mission is “to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” One of the ways they have chosen to mobilize volunteers is by providing activity guides for clubs, groups and classes who are looking to organize for Red Cross Month. Here are 3 great activities you can do today!

Prepare and Share Kit Drive
Only 28% of American households have a preparedness kit. Perfect for organizing at a school, club or church, a Prepare and Share Kit Drive asks the community to collect and assemble packs of essential items for when disaster strikes. Before you start your drive, contact your local Red Cross chapter to plan a list of items, a delivery location, a method of collection and a time frame for the drive.

Iron Rich Feast
The American Red Cross hosts over 200,000 blood drives each year. With all of these drives around the country, an Iron Rich Feast is the perfect way to unite a community and motivate them to give blood. Of the people who are deferred from donating blood, a majority are deferred for having low iron levels. Staging a community feast is a great opportunity to recruit new donors while also educating your group on the importance of giving blood.

Flirting for Disaster
That is right! We said flirting. Only 53% of Americans think they know what to do in the first five minutes of a disaster. One of the most creative ways to increase this number is through a networking event called Flirting for Disaster. Help spread the word about disaster preparation while engaging new volunteers and donors in a fun community event.
