Yellow or discolored teeth in children may be a concern for parents, but it’s more common than you might think. While it is generally recommended to wait until 13-14 years of age before having whitening procedures.

There are some steps you can take to whiten your kid’s teeth.

  1. Talk to your dentist. Before doing anything, make an appointment with your child’s dentist. They will be able to tell you if discoloration is due to an underlying issue like tooth trauma or fluorosis, or internal or external staining.
  2. Get a professional cleaning. There is a good chance that a professional dental cleaning will remove some surface discoloration. At the very least, a professional cleaning will remove tartar and plaque build up, which is usually yellow or brownish in color.
  3. With a dentist’s approval, try whitening toothpastes. Whitening toothpastes contain gentle chemicals and abrasives that scrub the surface of teeth to remove some external stains.
  4. For older kids, ask about in-office whitening. Teens 14 and older may be able to get a whitening treatment at the dentist’s office. In-office whiting is faster and typically more effective than at-home methods.
  5. Maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing daily is the best preventative method kids can take to keep teeth from yellowing. Talk to your kids about the importance of brushing. If they don’t yet understand that their teeth have to last a lifetime, they may at least appreciate the effect their teeth have on their appearance.
